Buying a Maine Coon?

First – What is a Pedigree Maine Coon?

The purebred/Maine Coon cross conversation often comes up when people are thinking of buying a Maine Coon. Technically there is no such thing as a non-pedigree Maine Coon, however there are some convincing lookalikes. It can be a little confusing if trying to make sense of it all for the first time.

So exactly is a ‘pedigree’ and why do people buy them?

Purebred kittens are bred from known pedigreed parentage. Their physical appearance conforms to the standards set for the breed. Why is important to buy a pedigree cat?

When looking for a pedigree cat, you will find that their general appearance, temperament, and personality are predictable for the breed. Since pedigrees are judged by the breed standards, you can choose certain Maine Coon characteristics that you want in your pet.

By choosing a purebred Cooncat, you’ll know what to expect. Many cats are purchased because the owners want a certain type of cat, conforming to expectations for the breed in terms of size, appearance, and temperament.

Another important reason to buy a pedigree cat is that you will know the health and hereditary illnesses of the kitten. When purchasing from a place besides a responsible breeder, you will have no idea how the cat was raised, its current health, or if the cat has heredity illnesses. Breeders breed cats for quality and not quantity.

Their utmost concern is for the health of the cats as well as how to improve breeding standards. Pedigree cats are registered with traceable lineage. If you don’t buy purebred cat, you won’t be able to tell the health of the kitten or its ancestors. If you want to be sure of getting those wonderful looks, quirks and legenary companionship you have to buy Maine Coon behaviors and characteristics from a reputable Maine Coon breeder.
