Largest Maine Coon Cat in the world
Earlier, the Guinness Book of World Records traditionally focused on the weight of each cat to determine the biggest cat.
But, in the last few decades, the record-keeping book has expanded its criteria to length and height. According to the Guinness World Records following are the largest Maine Coon cats in the world:
Stewie
Mymains Stewart Gilligan, aka Stewie, is the largest Maine Coon cat on record. The Guinness Book of World Records certified Stewie as the longest domestic cat in 2010 when he measured an incredible 48.5 inches long (123 cm).
The longest Maine Coon cat also previously held the record for longest tail on a domestic cat, at 41.5 cm (16.3 in).
Stewie was owned by Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness of Reno, Nevada. He was frequently working as a certified therapy animal.
Stewie had a unique appearance: a brown tabby coat, white muzzle and chest, and an impressive bushy tail. His eyes were a striking green, perfectly complementing his light brown fur.
In addition to his impressive size, He was known for his charming, laidback personality. As Robin described him, Stewie was “a true gentle giant who loved cuddles and catnip”.
He was also a bit of a troublemaker, often getting into mischief and getting into places he wasn’t supposed to be.
Unfortunately, Stewie died from cancer on February 4, 2013, at 8. He left behind a legacy of fame and admiration. His world record remains unchallenged, and his unique size and appearance will be remembered for years.
Ludo
After the passing of Stewie, Ludo, a Maine Coon cat from Wakefield, South Yorkshire of the United Kingdom, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest domestic cat in the world on October 6, 2015.
He measured 118.33 cm (3 ft 10.59 in) from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. Ludo weighed a whopping 34 pounds, making him the heaviest Maine Coon cat.
He was owned by Kelsey Gill. Gill noted that the cat was very gentle, friendly, and large. Unfortunately, Ludo’s days as the world’s largest Maine Coon cat were very short as another Maine Coon dethroned him by just a whisker – or 1.7 cm (0.6 in).
Barivel
On May 22, 2018, another Maine Coon, named Barivel, from Vigevani, Italy, succeeded Ludo and became the largest cat in the world.
When measured from head to tail tip, Barivel came in at 120 cm (3 ft. 11 in). Barivel was born in September 2016 and lives with his owners, Cinzia Tinnirello and Edgar Scandurra.
Barivel is a friendly and affectionate cat whose owners say he loves spending time with them. He is a great companion for the family, and they are proud to have him as part of their family.
Barivel has become an internet sensation, with thousands of people worldwide following his journey and growth.
Days of Barivel’s superiority numbered?
Days of Barivel’s superiority may indeed be numbered as Australia’s biggest Maine Coon cat Omar likely to knock Barivel from his throne when officially recognized by the Guinness World Records.
Omar is believed to be measuring 4 feet and 11 inches long. The orange tabby Maine Coon has an Instagram account with over 160,000 followers!
There is a new Maine Coon from Worcester who may also challenge Barivel’s reign. Murphy, who is 12 months old, weighs 24.3 lbs (11kg) and measures 104 cm from nose to tail.
He is close to achieving a world record and still has plenty of growth potential. Sareeta Brewin, the owner of Murphy, has noted that the public often misidentifies him as a dog or even a lion.
